The Art of Kintsugi

The ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi incorporates mixing of gold or silver dust with lacquer to join broken pieces of pottery or ceramics together. Not only is there no attempt to hide the damage, but the respair is literally illuminated and the repaired object becomes more valuable than the original.

The cracks and repairs can simply represent an event in the life of an object rather than allowing it to be discarded. The problems of life, to which all humans are subject, could not be clearer than in the breaks, the knocks, and the shattering to which ceramic ware also is subject. We are all shattered and scarred by life events, but God can take our broken pieces and turn them into a source of strength and beauty.
