Dear Essay readers: In the fall of 2016 an SA member in Helsinki asked, “Why do we need to pay for the electronic copy of Essay?” The answer to his question begins with this issue of Essay: the electronic version of Essay is now available on the sa.org/essay website! This also fulfills the oft repeated desire of Roy K., our founder, to have Essay be available for free to any sexaholic who desires to read it.

Dear Essay readers: When we arrive at our first SA meeting, the motivation is almost always a mix of fear and of pain. That’s what it takes to get our attention, it seems. When we sit in an SA meeting and identify with the shares of one another, the realization dawns that we can find freedom from the pain and the fears.

Many AA groups have a “Grapevine Rep” (GvR). The AA Service Manual describes that servant’s role as follows: “The GvR’s job is to make sure that members are aware of the Fellowship’s international journal and the enhancements to sobriety it offers… It is anticipated that each AA group would have a GvR and at least one subscription to the magazine” (AA Service Manual, Rev. 1991, S85).
