The Hard Lesson

Turning to God one moment at a time, one day at a time, is a way of life he is committed to with God’s help and the Fellowship’s support.

Made a decision. When I first came into recovery in 1998, I thought making a decision was a one-time event. Almost 30 years later, I’ve learned the hard lesson that I have to make a decision every day—sometimes multiple times a day. As my sponsor told me months ago, sometimes it’s 25, 30, 40, 50 times a day or more. I’m faced with challenges every day.

My challenge is to stay sober and to recover in those moments. Making a decision to stay sober and to turn any anxiety, grief, trouble, or challenge over to my Higher Power works. It works every time. I just have to do it. I just have to get on my knees, get humble, and turn it over to God and let God take away the difficulty. God “could and would if he is sought.” Let God give me the strength to endure the temptation, to endure the challenge, to endure the barrier or the obstacle to a sober, happy, free, and peaceful life.

The Big Book makes it clear that it’s not just necessary to be a nice guy once in a while or to be a good Samaritan occasionally. I need to be assisting, helping, and charitable to other people, to be of maximum value to others every day, multiple times a day: “these are thoughts that must go with us constantly” (AA 85).

This seems like an ominous task, especially if we take on these burdens alone. The good news is that we have each other. If I keep Tradition One in mind, God will assist me and those I help. I just need to make that decision to turn my will and life to the care of God throughout the day, every day, one day at a time.
