This is my story. It is not very pretty and I made some real bad choices in my life. Understand that I do not blame all the things in my early life for the things I did later. I used to use the fact that my own father turned me out when I was 12 as a reason for what I did. This was only a way for me not to accept the responsibility for my own actions.
I’m writing to you to raise some issues that have become somewhat of a passion for me—namely same-sex orientation, or behavior. I’ll start by giving you a little of my background. SA started in Melbourne, Australia in December 1992. I knew that SA had something that I wanted. For the first five months there were just three members.
…I went into treatment for alcoholism, but soon found out I also had a sexual addiction. What a relief to find out I was a sexaholic, that I was not crazy, that I was not a pervert, gay, morally corrupt, bisexual or any of the other names that I called myself.
During the past 2 years I’ve been an active member of SA and able to maintain my sobriety one day at a time. All credit goes to my Higher Power and the principles and fellowship of SA.
I’ve been in this program over three years and still wonder why I still don’t feel entirely comfortable in a room full of men. Before becoming sexually sober, my obsession/compulsion included both heterosexual and homosexual urges. The former produced a great deal of guilt because of taking advantage of a younger sister and later in life taking advantage of women. The latter produced great emotional difficulties as well.
