Instead of taking Step Three, sometimes the step takes us. Our defects of character place us in the bondage of a self that is determined to never surrender. The rebellious self fights so hard and so long that it wears itself out until it has no more capacity to fight. One falls into surrender as gently as if it were willing all along. Only the God of our understanding can use our defects for such victorious surrender, freedom, and recovery.
